Rum tasting

Bristol Classic Rum, Mauritius

My collection of Bristol Classic Rum bottles has been steadily growing over the past couple of years, and this bottle marks the seventh on my shelf. This bottle in particular really stands out from the other bottles in my wider collection because it is not molasses based. Long-term readers of the blog will know that I am not known for my love of agricole or cane juice rums.

Bristol Classic Rum has built a strong reputation among enthusiasts for its independently bottled releases, often showcasing distinctive single casks and lesser-seen distilleries from across the rum-producing world. Founded by John Barrett, the company has long focused on selecting and bottling rums that highlight the character of their origin and maturation, making each release an interesting opportunity to explore a different side of the category.

On the nose.

Maple syrup is the first thing that jumps out. There’s a really pleasant warmth with a very fruity profile such as peaches, bananas, green grapes, and maraschino cherries. Ginger starts to develop that adds depth and warmth. A cane juice profile is definitely present but not in your face – it presents more fresh and citrus. The cognac influence on the aroma is wonderful.

On the palate.

This is very citrusy (literally a waterfall of limes) with a very bright profile that has a long finish and a decent amount of heat from ginger. The cognac influence on this makes this unlike any other kind juice I’ve had. Heaps of tropical fruits (banana and peaches) alongside pepper, grassy notes and pears. The consistency of the profile presented across both the nose and the palate makes for a very well crafted rum.

9/10 – cane juice isn’t usually for me but this is a game changer.

My scoring system, explained
  • 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
  • 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
  • 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
  • 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
  • 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
  • 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
  • 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
  • 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
  • 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
  • 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
