Nose
This is maybe a little sweeter than I might have expected with honey and marzipan both present.
The sweetness is muted slightly due to the presence of fresh wood shavings and some wispy smoke… and when I say smoke, I don’t mean anything in the realms of yesterday‘s whiskey; this is much closer to some wood burning on the beach and being stood down wind.. slightly salty smoky profile.
There’s a reasonable, but not overwhelming, amount of wood for the age.
Palate
This has a very oily mouth feel that really coats the tongue and lingers for ages.
Initially sweet with honey, walnuts and some crème brûlée this is very approachable and I can imagine many Rum drinkers very happily enjoying a glass of this over an evening
There is a decent amount of peppery tingle that is accompanied, oddly, by mango??!
And despite the fact that I’ve called out quite a few of the sweet notes, I can’t ignore the salty and savoury notes in this whiskey that make it beautifully balanced.
7/10 – Right up my street.
My scoring system, explained
- 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
- 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
- 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
- 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
- 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
- 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
- 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
- 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
- 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
- 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
