Real Rum Experience present “Spirit Icons: With Dave Marsland”
Last Wednesday (15th October), I had the pleasure of attending a truly unique evening: Spirit Icons: With Dave Marsland, hosted by Real Rum Experience. Unlike the usual guided tastings, this event took on a new format – a live interview and Q&A with a very well known face in the rum world, complimented nicely by six delicious pours from Dave’s personal collection.
Dave is the ambassador for St Lucia Distillers, the creator of Manchester Rum Fest, and most recently, the author of his first book, Saint Lucia: A History of Sugarcane and Rum. The evening was a fantastic opportunity to hear his story first-hand; not just the highlights of his career, but the personal journey that led him to become a central figure in the rum community. From tales of discovering rare expressions to building one of the UK’s most celebrated rum festivals, Dave’s passion for rum was infectious. The Q&A allowed guests to ask everything from tips on tasting to insights into the rum industry, and Dave delivered with warmth, knowledge, and a touch of humour.
A highlight of the evening was the tasting itself. Dave shared six carefully selected rums from his personal collection, each with its own story. The pours were diverse, showcasing different styles, regions, and flavours – a mini masterclass in rum appreciation made more special by hearing Dave describe why each rum held a special place in his collection.
To wrap up the evening, guests had the chance to have their books signed by Dave himself. It was a simple but meaningful touch, rounding off what was already a memorable experience. Meeting Dave and chatting about rum over a shared appreciation for the spirit made the night feel intimate, even in a room full of enthusiasts and trade professionals alike.
What made this event stand out was the combination of storytelling, expert insights, and hands-on tasting. It was the first event of its kind by Real Rum Experience, and judging by the buzz in the room, hopefully the first of many. Each session promises a chance to meet industry icons, taste exceptional spirits, and connect with a community of fellow rum lovers.
