Peggy Dark Rum Spirit Drink

I was kindly gifted a bottle of Peggy Dark Rum Spirit Drink to try and share my honest thoughts. I’m always happy to try something new, and I like that this one is upfront about what it is. It’s not a straight rum, but a rum-based spirit drink, and I think there’s nothing wrong with that as long as you go into tasting it knowing what you’re drinking.
What sets Peggy Dark apart from the usual spiced rums is the cold-pressed coffee infusion, it’s one of the first things that makes the bottle stand out to me. As with any gifted bottle, I’m approaching this fairly and sharing my honest thoughts.

On the nose.
There’s some astringency (ethanol/nail varnish remover) that dissipates to reveal a muskiness I associate with damp wood, alongside overripe (brown) bananas and a slightly synthetic/artificial caramel flavouring. Underneath all of this I find a hint of coffee – but it’s far more subtle than I expected.
On the palate.
This is very sweet. It starts off with the feeling of vanilla syrup in a latte and slowly transforms in the mouth to a much drier and robust espresso shot. Unlike the nose, the coffee is the prevailing flavour profile here alongside some ‘supporting’ notes of caramel, a little mushy brown banana and brown sugar. There isn’t really a lot here that screams rum in honesty but as a coffee liqueur alternative in cocktails or an after dinner dessert style pour this would stand strong.
5/10 – As a coffee liqueur alternative I’d probably give this a 6; but rating this as a Rum I think that 5 is a fair score. This falls into the mixing category for me.
My scoring system, explained
- 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
- 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
- 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
- 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
- 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
- 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
- 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
- 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
- 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
- 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
