My top tips for attending a show
Whisky and rum shows are fantastic opportunities to explore a wide range of spirits, meet industry experts, and discover new favourites. Whether you’re a regular to these shows or a first-time attendee, here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your experience.

Pre show
Check the event schedule in advance. Many shows have masterclasses/tasting sessions and exclusive pours. Make a note of the key things you don’t want to miss. Book in advance where possible.
On the morning of the show itself you want to be setting yourself up right for the day ahead and that means a nice hearty breakfast to line your stomach!
You also want to be avoiding anything (especially in the couple of hours lead up) that will knock your palate too far off neutral – that includes coffee, toothpaste, chewing gum and spices… sorry guys but that means a big bland brekkie 😭 and whilst you’re there get a head start on hydration with plenty of water.
During show
First and foremost, drink lots of water (sensing a theme yet?)! It’s not just going to keep you hydrated, and prevent you getting too drunk too quickly but also help with cleansing your palate between samples.
I like to take a notebook with me so that I can jot down rough tasting notes or an indication of what I did and didn’t like (helpful for future purchases!)
Remember it’s not a race so take your time and have fun – take notes and ask questions. Distillers and brand ambassadors are there to share their knowledge, so don’t be shy! Ask questions about the production process, cask types, or even recommended pairings.
Don’t be afraid to take advantage of the spittoons on offer either, nobody will be offended – you don’t have to like everything and there are lots of rums to get through!
My final suggestion when you’re at the event would be to take your time to scout the stands and rums on offer. Try to work your way up in ABV and sample any of your “must try” rums early on before your palate starts getting a bit wonky from lots of different rums.
Remember that these shows are the perfect place to experiment and try before you buy. Go outside of your comfort zone with different styles, regions, and cask finishes… you might find a new favourite.
Post show
Stay connected with the brands and distilleries you enjoyed by following them on social media or signing up for newsletters. This keeps you in the loop for future releases and events.
Review your tasting notes whilst they’re fresh and start deciding which rums you’re going to buy first!
Oh… and a glass of water probably wouldn’t hurt either 😅
