For my debut into whisky this felt like a pretty exciting one to start with; and an awesome transition with the rum cask too!

An Israeli single malt whisky from the Milk & Honey distillery – this whisky is part of the Apex collection, specialising in exceptional casks!

*I have to caveat this tasting note with the fact that I’m coming at this very much from a rum drinkers perspective – please take that into consideration if you’re a whisky aficionado!

Nose

Well… we’re not in Kansas anymore Toto! Immediately the difference between this and the 2-300 rums that I’ve tried over the years is huge.

The first thing that comes to mind and I just can’t seem to shake is warm porridge topped with honey – a very yeasty aroma. As this continues to develop in the glass the aromas open up to include a host of baking spice reminiscent of, but vastly different from, those I get with rum.

Palate

The oatmeal/porridge theme continues here with a warm and sweet yeasty note that is really enjoyable.

As the palate continues to evolve and develop the porridge remains a key note in the flavour profile whilst being joined by melon, milk chocolate and a touch of bitterness that reminds me of torched in the skin, blackened/burned bananas.

This does NOT drink like a 57% ABV spirit… If I had to have guessed I would have put this at the mid to high 40s… 46% perhaps.

9/10 – a lovely intro into whisky!!

My scoring system, explained
  • 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
  • 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
  • 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
  • 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
  • 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
  • 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
  • 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
  • 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
  • 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
  • 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
