I popped into the Whisky Exchange store a couple of months ago, not long after making the decision to start my whisky journey alongside my passion for Rum; naturally I was pretty quickly out of my depth but the fantastic staff came to my rescue. After a long chat about my likes & dislikes plus a couple of tastings to help steer me towards a bottle that hit my sweet spot; we came to the Bardstown Bourbon Origin Series. I’m still learning exactly what I like and applying some common grounds between rum and whisky so please take my notes with a pinch of salt (a Rum Drinker’s journey into Whisky if you will).

So with that being said.. here are my tasting notes for the first bottle in my Whisky Collection.

Nose

Initially this opens up with pine kernels and peanuts that transports me into the queue at five guys. Malt vinegar is also present.

As I sit with this in my glass a little longer notes of peaches/nectarines develop alongside honey, apricot, caramel (unlike the caramel I would get in a rum!), vanilla and flax seeds – leading towards me thinking of a smoothie.

Palate

Soft stone fruit continues as per the nose. Milky caramel (not dark) like toffee and vanilla.

Buttery cookie dough (think warm like it’s just been kneaded) with dusty chocolate chips. Granary toast that is well done but not burnt.

This has a dry, woody and spiky (peppery) profile that is also soft and rounded with a long subtle finish.

6/10 – A strong start to my Whisky collection.

My scoring system, explained
  • 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
  • 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
  • 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
  • 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
  • 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
  • 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
  • 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
  • 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
  • 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
  • 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
