Auténtico Nativo 20 year

This bottle was a gift from a friend and I went into tasting it quite curious and with no real expectations or prior knowledge to fall back on. At the time of tasting I hadn’t read much about it, which made the tasting experience feel quite similar to a blind tasting.

Auténtico Nativo was not a brand I had really come across before, even though the style of rum itself is very familiar to me. It is produced in Panama, Column Still and has a decent age statement so I could focus on the familiarities, differences and how it actually presented itself in the glass.

On the nose.

A strong body of pinot noir accompanied by candied pecans. Some wood presence, slightly damp and old, that sits underneath lifting rather than being a dominant note. Some stewed fruits and a little sweetness towards the end.

On the palate.

Very thick and rich (almost syrupy) mouthfeel with very little heat. Some tannins early on followed by cherries, cinnamon, thick molasses. Some sweetness, without being overly, coming from vanilla. The pecans from the nose come through in a mix of nuts.

6/10 – An exceptionally inviting nose with the palate delivering a welcoming profile. The lower ABV and sweetness prevents this scoring higher but it remains enjoyable.
