Distillery: Rum Factories of Santiago De Cuba
Santiago de Cuba is a rum with deep roots in the island’s history, produced at one of Cuba’s oldest distilleries in the city of the same name. Often described as the birthplace of Cuban rum, Santiago has played an important role in shaping the lighter Cuban style that contrasts with the heavier rums of places like Jamaica or Guyana. For those curious about exploring what makes Cuban rum distinctive, this distillery is usually a good place to start.
The 12 Year is one of the more mature expressions in the lineup and shows how extended time in oak develops depth while still keeping to the clean, approachable Cuban profile. It represents the upper end of Santiago’s range and for me pairs beautifully with a square of dark chocolate, which really complements its character and makes for an enjoyable way to experience the rum.
Nose
A soft (almost praline) nuttiness immediately delivers a very pleasant welcome of what’s to come. Vanilla and citrus peel develop next adding more depth and balance. On the tail end we see banana and a medium-dark chocolate round things off.
Palate
A reasonably dry get rich profile that is carrying a lot more flavour than I would expect for a 40% ABV.
Humid oak, dark chocolate, fresh coffee, honeycomb and nuts all come together beautifully to give this a pretty earthy profile. Tropical and citrus notes sit underneath to add further complexity and balance.
On the finish cinder toffee / burnt caramel add a really enjoyable parting note.
7/10 – this is fantastic value for money and makes for a great easy sipper.
My scoring system, explained
- 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
- 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
- 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
- 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
- 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
- 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
- 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
- 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
- 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
- 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
