I was really surprised to have found that I hadn’t shared any tasting notes for this rum yet, despite having had it since it first came out. That being said I’ve just restocked this and am taking the opportunity to write down some proper notes now.

Black Tot Historic Solera is a bold, complex expression crafted by Elixir Distillers as part of their Black Tot range. A nod to the British Navy’s iconic rum traditions. Unlike standard blends, this rum brings together rums from Guyana, Barbados, and Jamaica, each bringing its regional character to the mix. These base rums receive an initial two years of ageing in first-fill Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, before moving into a three-tier solera system for further maturation.

What is a Solera System and why does it matter here?

The term “solera” comes from Spanish, meaning “on the ground,” and refers to a fractional blending and ageing method famously used for sherry, and sometimes adapted for spirits like rum. Here’s how it works:

  • Barrels are organized in tiers (often three in rum use), with the oldest spirits in the bottom tier.
  • When it’s time to bottle, only part of the bottom barrels is drawn off—never emptied completely.
  • That drawn portion is replaced by liquid from the next tier up, which is then replenished from the tier above it, and so on, with new spirit entering at the top tier.
  • Over time, older and younger liquids continuously mingle, delivering both depth and consistency through complexity and gradual integration of age

In the case of Black Tot Historic Solera, this process means each bottle offers a seamless marriage between vibrant fresh spirits and the concentrated, mature character inherited from the older layers – creating that signature depth without resorting to vatted age statements

Nose

Sweet red fruit battles and balances perfectly against sour red fruit. Sticky ginger cake, chocolate, toffee and banana. There’s a little nod to the original blend of the finest Caribbean. Raspberry, pepper and damp wood.

Palate

This is chewy and sticky with a flavour profile unlike anything I’ve tried before – despite trying many Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso cask finishes. The solera system has imparted big and bold flavours. Chocolate is undeniably a big part of the profile here complemented by raisins, ginger and dark fruit jam. A pleasant amount of wood that is not overpowering. Despite lots of flavours that individually impart sweetness the rum itself is balanced in such a way as to not feel too sweet.

9/10 – Outstanding to drink neat & flavourful in spirit forward cocktails! I’ve already restocked.

My scoring system, explained
  • 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
  • 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
  • 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
  • 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
  • 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
  • 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
  • 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
  • 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
  • 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
  • 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
