Rum tasting

Transcontinental Rum Line, Panama 2015

ABV: 43%

Country: Panama

Age: 6 years

Cask: ex-bourbon

Still: Multi-column still

Price: £56

Distillery: Unknown

I tasted this rum for the first time at the Real Rum Experience evening as part of an exploration into the range. Tropically aged for six years in Panama and bottled at 43% this multi-column still rum was pretty popular with the group.

Nose

Some ethanol/acetone up front giving this quite a dry opening note. Muted, soft fruits – pineapple and something else I can’t quite place.

Cola cube sweets, ginger and cardamon build in the glass with some fresher citrus notes lifting from underneath.

Palate

Freshly pressed pineapple – very juicy, followed by heaps of stewed cherries. Once I’ve got through those stronger fruity notes this becomes much more subtle with quite a light profile. A short-medium finish with a little wood influence.

Note: This was tasted and scored as part of a tasting event meaning my palate wasn’t completely fresh.

5/10 – A crowd pleasing rum to kick off the session.

My scoring system, explained
  • 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
  • 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
  • 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
  • 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
  • 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
  • 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
  • 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
  • 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
  • 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
  • 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
