Rum tasting

Dos Maderas Atlantic

ABV: 37.5%

Country: Barbados & Guyana

Age: 5 + 1 Year

Cask: Unknown + ex-PX casks

Still: Unknown

Price: £40

I really enjoyed tasting this as part of an exploration into the full range whilst at the TWE rum show last year. Dos Maderas very kindly sent me a bottle; but as always I’ll be sharing my honest opinion.

If you have tried some of the other bottling in the range then this will feel pretty familiar; the rum goes through the same dual ageing process – notably a much shorter period in PX sherry casks in Spain.

Nose

Some acetone/nail varnish remover as a top note. Once that dissipates you’re left with the vibrant, punchy aroma of pears poached in red wine. Sweet and oaky tannins are already making my mouth water.

Palate

This is particularly interesting as the mouthfeel of the rum itself is rather thin but the finish develops into something more chewy. The red wine/PX sherry influence isn’t as bold as the nose would suggest but that’s not to say it isn’t present and having a delightful influence. Some sweetness present on the finish with an almond/marzipan profile.

This is a really pleasant easy sipper neat. I mentioned that PX sherry influence a moment ago and I think without that this would very likely be quite a boring rum that wouldn’t appeal to me. I find it kind of amazing the influence a year in an alternative cask can have.

5/10 – I’d personally love to see a little extra ABV on this to score it higher.

My scoring system, explained
  • 10: Exceptional. This is best in class and a firm favourite of mine.
  • 9: Outstanding. Near perfection, a bottle I would be sad to finish (and very happy to restock!)
  • 8: Excellent. An evening spent sipping this would be a very good one.
  • 7: Great. Add to cart, no questions asked.
  • 6: Very good. At the right price I would definitely buy a bottle.
  • 5: Good. If someone poured me a glass you wouldn’t hear me complain.
  • 4: Above average. Not quite good but better than some.
  • 3: Average. Average at best, this isn’t offensive but equally not exciting either.
  • 2: Not for me. This simply means it’s not a profile I find enjoyable; rather than a reflection of quality.
  • 1: Not the spirit. This is a poor representation of the spirit.
